In Portugal, the most well-known and well-regarded courses are along the Algarve. The Algarve boasts so many golf options and because of this golfers return year after year to experience new destinations and all the time they are never disappointed, some of the courses that are not to be missed include the Vilamoura Old, Victoria, Monte Rei Golf Club, Quinta da Cima, and Ria, Quinta do Logo North and South, Vale do Lobo Ocean and Royals, San Lorenzo, Vilamoura Old, Palmares Lagos, Penina ( one of the first golf course ever to be built on the Algarve) Try Monte Rei it’s one of our favorites.

The Old course designed by Frank Pennick is highly regarded throughout the world and when played off the back tees is a real challenge however make sure you have an early night before you take on the back tees. The Victoria course is considered a true test of golf with its challenging water hazards, well-positioned bunkers, and rolling hills. In contrast,

Monte Rei Golf Club designed by Jack Nicklaus, this challenging golf course is built on rugged Portuguese terrain and has one of the country’s most dramatically positioned clubhouses. The par 3s are spectacular and is one of the few courses still not overlooked by villas and hotels if you are playing golf in the Quinta or Tavira areas try and make time to play Monte Rei, it is an excellent golf course and the facility matches the extra spend.

Quinta do Logo designed by Willian Mitchell has successfully hosted eight Portuguese Opens and is a favourite amongst many European Tour players. The North course was recently upgraded and the south course is undergoing changes at the moment, both courses are really good test for all handicaps and always a pleasure to play

The Royal and Ocean courses at Vale do Lobo are not to be missed. Hole 16 on the Royal Course is widely regarded as the most picturesque hole in Portugal as it overlooks the ocean with a clay cliff separating the golf hole from the beach. In addition to being beautiful, it requires a high level of skill to complete with a 218-metre long shot over three cliffs. It is also one of the most photographed holes in Europe.

The San Lorenzo Golf Club was opened in 1988 and is one of the most popular of all the courses in Portugal. Located on the southeast corner of Quinta do Lago, it borders the estuary and the saltwater lagoons and offers perfectly groomed Bermuda grass fairways.

4. Choose from Many Different Courses

Golf as a sport is relatively new to Portugal. The first course in the Algarve was designed by Henry Cotton in 1966 and in just over fifty years the area has now become one of Europe’s premier golfing destinations drawing hundreds of thousands of golfers every year. In the Algarve alone there are over forty 9-hole or 18-hole courses to choose from at thirty-five different golf clubs, all situated within a 150-kilometre radius.
